What does this gourmet and hiking holiday consist of?

The nights will be spent in the white town of Vejer de la Frontera, one of the most beautiful towns in Spain. There will be two cooking courses, all done in the cooking school of Annie in Vejer, while of the two hikes, one will be in La Breña natural park, and the other in El Estrecho natural park.

Cadiz province is one of the most biodiverse provinces in mainland Spain. Cadiz’s habitats vary widely, including the only area in mainland Europe with subtropical forest (laurisilva), Mediterranean forest, dune systems, and more. Moreover, you will be seduced with views of magical landscapes in Cadiz and the Strait of Gibraltar. Cadiz has over a third of its surface protected, while its climate and sunlight hours are similar to Canary Islands.

In the guided nature tours we will discover more about Cadiz and learn about why our gastronomy is so rich. It is related to our climate, our location, our history, and to the many culinary, medicinal and traditional use of Mediterranean plants found within Cadiz province. You will find many of these plants in your supermarket in lotions, herbal teas, and to flavour your food or even eat them as part of your main plate.

On the other hand during your cooking courses with Annie you will learn how to cook traditional Andalusian recipes, all with local products found in the area. In fact, 95% of what you consume with her has zero miles. It is an authentic slow food culture. All fish, meat, cheese, fruit, vegetables and wine come from this unique region of Cadiz.

Annie and I, Carlos, would love to share our passion for all that’s delicious in this superabundant gourmet paradise as well as the local nature with you through this cooking and hiking holiday in Vejer de la Frontera.

Wednesday 8th – Monday 13th SEPTEMBER, 2021

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive to Vejer de la Frontera and meet everyone while doing a tapas tour through the century old streets of this white town.

Day 2: Hiking tour in the morning through a pine forest in La Breña natural park, visiting the largest dovecote in the world and enjoying incredible views of the Trafalgar cape and the sea. This hike should take us around 3-4 hours. Finally we will have a great time enjoying a picnic organised by the talented Annie.

Day 3: Cooking course with Annie, first visiting the local food market of Barbate to find the perfect local ingredients for the dishes. Then, head back to the Andalusian cooking school in Vejer where Annie will lead you in creating (and of course eating!) an authentic Spanish meal. Of course while cooking we will be learning about sherry and tasting different types.

Day 4: Hiking tour in El Estrecho natural park. We will hike along cliffs full of Griffon Vulture perches and see incredible views of Tarifa, Bolonia, Vejer de la Frontera and more. This hike is a 2-3 hours hike.

Day 5: You will shop with Annie in Vejer as locals do. Visit Paco the butcher then back to the kitchen to make local dishes that can be easily recreated at home. While cooking we will be learning about sherry and tasting different types.

We will be ending this wonderful gourmet and hiking vacation with a farewell dinner.

What does it include and what is the cost?

Staying in a classic room at Casa del Califa, Vejer for 5 nights. Starting at €1,750 pp (2 people sharing) *Prices inclusive of tax. 

The price includes:

  • 5 nights accommodation at La Casa del Califa in Vejer
  • A tapas tour of Vejer
  • 2 Cooking classes & lunches with Annie B in her Spanish Kitchen
  • A visit to local Barbate market, the hub of the Almadraba
  • 2 days hiking with Carlos including lunch in a venta and an Annie B hillside picnic
  • 1 farewell dinner
  • All transport during the tour

Not included; flights, insurance, transfers to/from Vejer
