Tabancos tour in Jerez de la Frontera

Tabancos are the traditional bars in Jerez de la Frontera, believed to have started in the 17th century. Before Sherry wine was bottled, it was sold by casks and cellars used to sell it to these tabancos in Jerez de la Frontera. Tabancos were “Sherry offices” where they sold Sherry wine to the final client and where you could taste it as well. Another main thing you could buy in these traditional bars was tobacco, which is partly where the name comes from.

It used to be more about the drink and not about food, although nowadays you can try all kinds of traditional food. Tabancos are the most traditional bars you can find in Jerez. Here they mix the love for Spanish Sherry, local food, and flamenco. One of the requirements to being called a tabanco is that 60-70% of the business is selling Sherry wine in bulk

There are many tabancos in Jerez de la Frontera, all of them have unique features, however we will recommend five.

Tabanco El Pasaje

We will start with the oldest tabanco in Jerez, from 1925. Open everyday with lots of flamenco shows, this is one of the only tabancos where you can book a table as long as you spend over €40.

Tabanco San Pablo

Beautiful traditional decoration from the beginning of the 20th century. This tabanco opened in 1934 in Jerez and the same family has been running it since then. It has very friendly staff with good Sherry and a perfect location.

Tabanco el Guitarrón de San Pedro

The Spanish Sherry wine menu is just outstanding. It is one of the only tabancos where it is completely run by women and the service is wonderful.

Here you will be able to taste lots of Very Old Rare Sherry, known as VORS (>30 years old) by the glass, and for an affordable price, which can sometimes be difficult to find.

Tabanco Plateros

It has a modern design compared to the other tabancos and therefore has a younger clientele. Some of the food goes a little away from the traditional and they innovate with food.

Tabanco Las Banderillas

If you want tradition and culture, here is where you should go. They have all kinds of local traditional food and, of course, Spanish Sherry. This tabanco is very influenced by bullfighting as you can see in the decoration. Food is exquisite and they have a large menu to choose from.
