Vejer de la Frontera Easter Programme 2022

Easter in Spain is one of the best experiences you will enjoy. It starts 40 days after Ash Wednesday, which is when Carnival finishes. The music, smell, costumes, and the figures covered in gold, silk and silver are outstanding. Even if you are not religious you will be thrilled to enjoy this celebration.

The list below are the events done every year in Vejer de la Frontera during Easter. So in case you are planning to come to Vejer de la Frontera for Easter in 2023 you can expect a similar schedule.

In Spanish schools, students, enjoy 8 days of holiday during Easter. It is one of the most important holidays in Southern Spain. This year, 2022, it will be going on from 8th until 17th April.

Each place throughout Cadiz province will have different processions (parades where they carry a religious scene from the bible). In this blog we will let you know the schedule of activities to do in Vejer de la Frontera as well as in other villages nearby.

Easter in Spain

Easter Sunday in Spain is preceded by an entire week of celebrations, known as La Semana Santa (“Holy Week”). During Easter in Spain, processions take place, beginning at churches. The highlight of the processions are the “Pasos”. These are large sculptures, or figures carved in wood, depicting scenes from the Bible, which are carried on the shoulders of people throughout the city/village for hours. Here in Vejer de la Frontera, they last around 4 hours.

The processions are slow marches that follow a predetermined route around a city, town or village. Large bands follow many of the “Pasos”, playing traditional Easter music. The pasos are led by the Nazarenos, the people in the robes and hats. Spending Easter in Seville is a very incredible experience, but Easter is celebrated all over Spain in a similar way.

Who are the people in robes?

The Nazarenos wear the pointed hats (known as capirotes) and robes. Nazarenos are part of the Catholic brotherhoods. Generally, each city has multiple brotherhoods, each with their own representation and different symbols and colour of robes. Often, these brotherhoods date back to the Middle Ages. Read our other blog post on the Nazarenos and their costumes.

Traditionally, only men could be in the Catholic brotherhoods but nowadays women also join in. However, Nazarenos represent penance, due to the historical significance.
