Top 10 places where to eat in Cadiz city

Cadiz is an amazing place for foodies and anyone who loves food. Wherever you go, you will find amazing food quality made with local produce. In this blog I will be giving my food recommendations of where to eat in Cadiz city.

It is linked to all the fresh produce in the region. You will find fresh fish and seafood of Sanlucar de Barrameda, cheese from Grazalema natural park, bluefin tuna, meat and fresh seasonal veggies from Conil de la Frontera, Vejer and Barbate. Moreover, Cadiz is the oldest city in western Europe and you can see this in its gastronomy.

There are so many great options to choose from, and sometimes it is hard to choose where to eat in Cadiz. Hopefully this list will help you decide, from more traditional places to high-end restaurants.

Traditional tapas in Cadiz city

In this section I will recommend traditional places where you can eat great local food with the local wine, sherry wine.
I will start with my favourite local taverns and tabancos.

1. Taberna la Manzanilla

This tavern is one of the most traditional places in Cadiz city. Jose is the third generation managing this location.

The tavern is like a tabanco from Jerez de la Frontera as they only sell sherry directly from the casks. They sell all the different types of Sherry and José still writes the prices on the bar with a chalk like in the old times.

The tapas are very typical, Iberian ham, local cheese, anchovies…But all delicious with his manzanilla served in a “gorrión” glass.

2. Taberna la Sorpresa

Another great traditional bar where you can get incredible sherries, including their beautiful amontillado. All the tapas are cold, but Juan Carlos, who worked with Gadira gets great Atlantic bluefin tuna. This beautiful tuna with a sherry is a great combination!

3. Ultramarinos Bar Veedor

It is a great place to see a local bar. Ultramarinos used to be bars where you could also buy some things to eat, like charcuterie or canned food.

Here they also offer warm Andalusian food like oxtail, cheese, kidneys, anchovies in vinegar, potato salad and more.

Some people would be shocked to see the tavern Casa Manteca is not here. It has changed a lot as it has become a tourist hotspot. Sadly the attention the last times I went has not been what it used to be. However, it is still a great place with lots of history.

Similarly, the local food market is a great place to eat fresh seafood and more traditional dishes.

Spanish or Moroccan Cuisine with local products in Cadiz

In this section I will be talking about restaurants that focus on the local produce with good presentation and some fusion, and good wine list.

4. Almanaque Casa de Comidas

This restaurant, in another beautiful location close to the plaza de España (Constitution square) is small. The attention, the local produce and the presentation is great.

The place is small so you have to book in advance. Their rices are sublime!

5. Restaurante Puerta del Edén

Here you’ll find the best Moroccon food in Cadiz city. For everyone who goes there, it ends up being one of their favourite spots.

Spanish gourmet cuisine in Cadiz

In this section I am going to put high-end restaurants in Cadiz city. These restaurants have the best value for high quality or Michelin stars.

6. El Faro de Cádiz

This restaurant is one of the most known places in Cadiz and always recommended. The service in the actual restaurants is not the best, however the tapas section in the bar is quite extraordinary.

With fresh local produce and beautiful presentation you can come here to enjoy their tapas. It fills up fast as well so better if you start early or very late.

7. Restaurante El Ciclo

Luiti Callealta is the head chef and owner of this restaurant. He worked with Berasategui, the chef with the third-most michelin stars in the world. Callealta also worked with Angel León and helped him reach the third Michelin star in Aponiente.

He decided to open this restaurant to promote the local products with everything that he has learnt in the high cuisine kitchens.

8. Ettu Restaurant

The location could not be better located. In the main plaza where the cathedral is you can find this beautiful place. It is another restaurant where, with the collaboration of the chef Luis Callealta, they created plates where they focus on Andalusian dishes and traditional dishes of Cadiz, with a modern cuisine.

9. Restaurante Contraseña

Paqui from Cadiz and Leon from the Netherlands own this restaurant. This restaurant has great value and focuses on the local cuisine of Cadiz. Together with their other more famous restaurant they are trying to promote the local gastronomy.

I must admit that it has been my best foodie experience so far in Cadiz. Their menu tasting has by far the best value.

10. Restaurante Código de Barra

Código de Barra is the best restaurant of this list of where to eat in Cadiz city. Owned by the same chef as Restaurante Contraseña. It is the only michelin-star restaurant in Cadiz city as of 2024. They won their first michelin star in 2023. It is one of the 6 restaurants in Cadiz province with michelin stars.

It is a great experience and for a very affordable price with local products and impeccable service and decoration. Some of the dishes are traditional from Cadiz but with a big twist.

DESSERTS

I can’t leave without recommending one of the top 10 best ice creams in the world here in Cadiz city. The “La Cremería Gelato Italiano” has won many prizes. Among them: The “Campeón de España” by Gelato Festival World  Masters 2021; Un Solete (the Repsol version of 1 michelin star) in 2022; Best desserts 2022 by “Restaurant Guru”; and finally, the Gelato world Champion festival 2024 got the 7th place (although it says Cadize instead of Cadiz!
