Story of Explore la Tierra in Vejer de la Frontera...

Explore la Tierra was founded in Vejer de la Frontera. It is a tour operator company which wants to let guests EXPLORE the Earth, the ground, the soil, the land… la Tierra has all these meanings in Spanish. The values that Explore la Tierra defends is sustainable tourism and sustainable food production. For instance, we use different sized vehicles that are group-specific. We use from 5-seater cars to vans, minibuses, or even buses. We only work with local businesses, and the food products we eat in our tours are all sourced from Andalusia.

Cadiz has always been involved with wine. It is the only place in the world where you will find the D.O.of Sherry. The "Sherry triangle" is found between Puerto de Santa María, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and of course, Jerez de la Frontera. In addition to wine, there is a vast selection of food to be found in Vejer de la Frontera and, throughout all of Cádiz. Foods made with fish, beef, pork, locally produced vegetables, and dishes that have a Moorish influence.

John Carlos Milburn Rodríguez

Hola! I'm Carlos and I live in Vejer de la Frontera, Cádiz. I funded this company and am the main guide for Explore la Tierra tours! I studied an Msc in Environment and have worked in the environmental field for 5 years between Canada and UK. After working and travelling outside of Spain for several years, I realized how amazing it is that many of Spain’s resources, including pork, are sustainably harvested.

When I recognised that many friends and people who I met outside Spain knew little about the varied and wonderful products and places that Spain has to offer, so I realised that I needed to design culinary tours to change this and promote my varied culture and gastronomy. Thus, I decided to do something about it by creating Explore la Tierra in Vejer de la Frontera.
Being a wine lover I studied wine courses. I earned a Level 2 certificate with Distinction from the Wine & Spirits Education Trust(WSET), a globally recognised program. My partner and I adopted a dog and named him "Monti" for Amontillado, one of my favourite type of sherries! I am also first aid certified.

I love travelling and have traveled to around 25 countries and lived in 4 continents. This has given me the ability to get to know other cultures and what people want from a tour. My aim is to provide the best possible experience for those who want to immerse themselves in the local culture. By learning more about my culture, traditions and food in Spain, specifically Vejer de la Frontera, has to offer.

Darrelle Moffat

I'm Darrelle and I also live in Vejer de la Frontera and help run the technical design and communications for the company. Originally, I am from Canada, where I grew up in Oshawa, Ontario. I have been fortunate to be able to live in so many places - Canada, Nepal, UK and now Spain. I am always blown away by the beauty of Spain and our stunning village in Vejer in particular! My favourite things of Cádiz province are the amazing local food and wine, the sunshine, virgin beaches and of course the wonderful people! Cádiz province is still a relatively underrated tourist destination - it has all the amazing things to enjoy but not the crowds.

I also got my Bachelor of Environment Studies in Canada at the University of Waterloo. My background is in wildlife and environment, having worked in turtle conservation in Ontario and as an ecologist in the UK. However, I have also developed an interest in the technical side of things. I have often worked creating websites, managing social media, designing print media and more throughout my career. I am thrilled that I am able to use some of these skills with Explore la Tierra and support the company in showing the amazing tours we have to offer.

In my free time I love to play the piano, drink craft beer (which is starting to develop in Cádiz province!), knit and learn how to surf in El Palmar.
