Algarve Wine Society (AWS) Sherry holiday trip
In case you missed it, the AWS recently took a fantastic trip to the Sherry region in Spain. I had the pleasure of designing this sherry holiday trip and it was truly a great experience for everyone involved.
Exploring the Sherry region is not just a fun getaway, it’s an opportunity to learn about the history and culture of this unique and important wine-producing area. Sherry is a fortified wine that comes from Cadiz province. The area’s climate, soil, and winemaking traditions all contribute to the distinct flavors of Sherry.

What did the Sherry holiday of AWS consist of:
During AWS Sherry trip, they had the chance to visit several family-run Sherry bodegas throughout the Marco de Jerez. In each one they tasted some of their premium sherries directly from the barrel. They learned about the different styles of Sherry and the traditional methods of production directly from the wine maker, owners and each owner came to explain the history of the bodega.
It was fascinating to see firsthand how the wine is aged and understand the solera system, a process that gives Sherry its complex and distinct flavors. They were able to compare different types of Sherry, from the crisp and dry Fino to the rich and sweet Pedro Ximénez. Or from a younger manzanilla to an over 100-year-old amontillado sherry. It was a true sensory experience, and it deepened their understanding and appreciation of this centuries-old wine.
Beyond the wine itself, my trip also allowed them to immerse themselves in the culture and cuisine of the Sherry region. They enjoyed traditional Andalusian dishes, many of them influenced by sherries, and learned about the region’s history linked to Sherry wine. In many cases we enjoyed the sherry tasting paired with local tapas to understand how gastronomical sherry wine is.
The Sherry region is a testament to the importance of preserving and celebrating traditional winemaking practices. The art of making Sherry has been passed down through generations, and it’s important to support and promote the continuation of these time-honored techniques. By exploring the Sherry region, they gained a deeper understanding of the importance of terroir and the unique environmental factors that contribute to the flavor and character of wine.

Conclusion of their AWS Sherry trip
The AWS were a bunch of incredible people very eager to learn about sherry. Overall, the Sherry holiday of the AWS was a great success. It provided their members with a wealth of knowledge, unforgettable experiences, and a deeper appreciation for the craft of Sherry winemaking. It was an opportunity to indulge in luxury, gain knowledge and insight, support local businesses, connect with others, and explore new destinations. Trust me, it’s an experience you won’t soon forget.
I highly recommend exploring the Sherry region to anyone who is passionate about wine and interested in learning about the rich history and culture of winemaking.
